How to Plan a Summer Weekend Trip to Massanutten Resort, aka Virginia’s Mini Mountain Disney

If you’re based in the Mid-Atlantic United States, Massanutten Resort is the closest true mountain resort experience. This family-friendly destination has even been called a “Mini Mountain Disney.” And getting there doesn’t require a flight. It’s only 2.5 hours from Washington, DC proper, and is definitely worth the drive. We have spent years exploring the area, but this was our first time actually staying “on property,” and believe us when we say, we’re already making late-summer, fall, and winter plans to return. Even better, we found the perfect place to stay while you play! So, if you’re looking to plan a weekend getaway to Virginia’s Massanutten Resort, you’re in the right place.

Where to Stay at Massanutten Resort: Trevino’s Getaway

During our trip, we were hosted by the owners of Trevino’s Getaway, a cozy rental home within Massanutten Resort, which we found to be the perfect home base for exploring the resort and the surrounding area. We were a short 5-minute drive from literally everything the resort had to offer. We’re talking the lodge, the lifts, the resort pool, the family fun center, and all of the on-site restaurants. We couldn’t recommend this spot more, but you don’t have to take our word for it alone; the property has also earned 5-stars on Airbnb.

The property is also pet-friendly, and the outdoor space provides a great space for your pups to stretch their legs and get some energy out. While I (Seth) was out riding the more gnarly mountain biking trails, Aleah was unwinding with a book and a glass of wine in the private backyard, complete with a hot tub and fire pit.

When the lifts stopped spinning for the day, we came back together to make dinner in the full-size, fully equipped kitchen and rounded out the night with some foosball in the basement before heading back upstairs to cuddle up and watch a movie. It truly felt like home away from home.

When is the Best Time to Visit Massanutten Resort?

Honestly, if summer is any indicator of the fun to be had at the resort, we’re positive there is no bad time to visit the resort. Spring offers budding trees and a chance to get outdoors in the sunshine as the trees begin to bud. Summer has the world-class mountain bike park in full tilt and packs adrenaline-filled days as you hurl yourself down the trail on two wheels. Fall offers a chance to take in the fall foliage from atop the mountain with scenic chairlift rides, and of course, winter brings the adrenaline-packed days back as skiers and snowboarders can search for tasty turns across the resort’s 23 trails.

What are the Best Things to Do at Massanutten Resort?

As we mentioned above, there is always something to do at Massanutten, but the mountain changes completely depending on the season. Winter offers opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and ice skating. Summer is the prime season for mountain biking, golf, hiking, and ziplining. And fall is the perfect time to take a scenic leaf-peeping chairlift ride. Regardless of the season, the resort’s indoor waterpark, spa, escape rooms, and arcade are always viable options for your itinerary. We prioritized hiking and mountain biking during this trip, and are sharing the highlights below.

Massanutten’s lift-accessed Bike Park features two distinct sections, offering riders the option to choose trails suited to their experience level. Their Low-Side trails are ideal for beginner and first-time downhill riders, featuring gentle green terrain with skills-based features to aid in progression, and their steeper High-Side trails provide a greater challenge as they’re faster and more technical. Bikes, along with required gear, are also available for rent. Renting is a great option if you’re traveling and didn’t bring your own gear, or if you’re just starting to dip your toes into the sport and have yet to invest in the essentials needed for a day on the trails.

I spent all of my day on the High-Side trails and can say hands down that the “upper trails” have fast and flowy jumps trails, as well as some very technical single-track like runs. “Creamy” was my absolute favorite with its ~1.5 mile descent of nothing but jumps and sweeping berms, while its little brother “Crunchy” is a quintessential singletrack, with some nice little hits tucked along its rocky, technical spots and tight, tree-filled sections.

If we didn’t drive this point home already, Massanutten Resort is THE destination for outdoor lovers. In addition to the MTB trails, the mountain also provides ample opportunities to take in the area’s natural beauty on foot. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk in the woods or a more challenging trek, the resort’s trail network has options for all skill levels.

One of the highlights of hiking at Massanutten is reaching the scenic overlooks scattered throughout the mountain. These viewpoints offer sweeping panoramas of the surrounding Shenandoah Valley, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and rolling farmland below. We particularly enjoyed hiking the 5.5 mile Massanutten Ridge Trail, but if you’re not up for a hike, you can take in the beautiful views pictured below right from the “Resort Overlook.” There’s plenty of parking here, and you only have to walk a few steps from your car to enjoy this sweeping vista. Plus, it’s only a 7-minute drive from Trevino’s Getaway!

What dining options are available at Massanutten Resort?

One of the best things about staying here is that you don’t have to leave the mountain to find a great meal. Whether you’re looking for a casual breakfast before a day of adventure, a quick lunch between activities, or a relaxing dinner with mountain views, the resort offers a variety of dining options to suit every taste.

You can enjoy everything from classic, yet elevated American fare and family-friendly restaurants to casual après-adventure outdoor dining spots to grab-and-go options, and many of the resort’s restaurants are conveniently located near the slopes, golf courses, and waterpark, making it easy to refuel throughout your stay. We loved the Sizzling Beer Cheese Fries at Campfire Grill and the Trash Can Nachos at Base Camp, which is located at the bottom, or base if you will, of the MTB trails.

The resort is also about 25 minutes from the Swift Run Gap Entrance to Shenandoah National Park, and just a stone’s throw away from dozens of wineries that dot the Shenandoah Valley. Harrisonburg’s Purple Wolf Vineyard at White Oak Lavender Farm (pictured below) is one of our all-time favorites and an idyllic place to spend a summer afternoon!

Aside from access to the park, there are so many activities/trails/amenities on-site that you may not even leave the resort itself. Trevino’s Getaway is literally minutes from everything the resort has to offer.
