The Best Way to Explore DC Neighborhoods

…Mural Tours!

Seth and I were recently invited to embark on Historic America’s inaugural U Street Music and Murals Tour. As residents of DC’s U Street corridor (that we learned was historically referred to as mid-city), we were elated to explore the history and culture of our neighborhood – and in just over two hours, we gained so much knowledge! This tour ignited all of our senses as we saw, touched, listened to, and TASTED different aspects of DC’s “Black Broadway.”

Keep reading for the highlights of our experience.

Iconic DC Haunts

One simply cannot tour U Street without making a stop at Ben’s Chili Bowl and checking out the murals that adorn Ben Ali Way. While we were here, we tasted a DC staple food and played a guessing game involving some of the people honored on the mural entitled “The Torch,” pictured above.

Historic Buildings

We learned that the True Reformer building was the first place that Duke Ellington was paid to perform…

… and the Bohemian Cavern was the hippest cave to enjoy a forbidden drink in during prohibition.

Music & Games!

This mural honors Marvin Gaye, and while we were here we played “guess that Marvin Gaye song” as we listened to some of his classics. Seth made a name for himself as the reigning song-guessing champ.

Diverse Artists

Works featuring women muralists were highlighted. Like this one by artists Kate DeCiccio and Rose Jaffe…

…and this one by Miss CHELOVE.

So. Much. History.

There is so much history living in DC’s neighborhoods, and our guides were so energetic and passionate about sharing their extensive knowledge with us. The founders of Historic America (including Rachel, above) led our tour and made our experience truly memorable and fun!

Seth and I have always been proponents of being tourists in our own city, and this immersive experience provided us with an opportunity to do just that! Whether you are a local or a visitor to Washington, and looking for the perfect DC day date, this tour is for you.

Historic America graciously provided us with a discount code to save you money on their tours, so when you book your tickets here enter HAPPILYEVEREXPLORING at checkout for 10% off!
