From iconic red rock formations, to towering snow capped mountains, to evergreens as far as the eye can see, Colorado ranks pretty high on our list of aesthetically pleasing states. The vibrant, western state that is “Colorful Colorado” lives up to its namesake, and in our experience her mix of winding roads and steep mountain passes are best explored by car. 1. Garden of the Gods
The vibrant red-orange rock formations that jut straight up from the Earth at Garden of the Gods National Natural Landmark are not to be missed. This park, located in Colorado Springs, is a true gem.This formation, known as Siamese Twins is one of the park’s more well known spots.
2. The Rockies
Home to some of the nation’s tallest mountain peaks, Rocky Mountain National Park is a must on your Colorado adventure.
3. Fresh Powder
With over a dozen ski resorts just a few hours from the airport, there’s no doubt you’ll find the prefect place to hit the slopes. Breckenridge in particular holds a special place in our hearts.
4. Great Sand Dunes National Park
These dunes, covering 30 square miles, are positioned in front of snow-capped, cloud-scraping mountains and have to be seen to be believed.
5. Beautiful Alpine Lakes
Gem Lake in Estes Park is one of our favorites – no matter the season.
6. Hot Springs
Colorado’s hot springs are as diverse as it’s landscapes. Valley View Hot Springs is one of our favorite hot spring resorts and boasts hillside hot pools and overlook the San Luis Valley.It should be noted that the hot springs at Valley View are clothing optional, always.If you’re looking for a more manicured hot spring experience, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to the largest hot spring pool in the world, and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy beautiful mountain views after a long day of skiing.
7. Red Rocks & Open Spaces
Wide open spaces are one of Colorado’s specialties as are red rocks. We found the perfect combination of the two on the Quarry Trail within Red Rock Open Space.
8. Plentiful Wildlife
In addition to mule deer, you may encounter coyotes, black bears, bighorn sheep, and bald eagles.
9. Iconic Bridges
With mountains and valleys come bridges to connect the peaks, and the Red Cliff Bridge that spans the Eagle River is one of our favorites.
10. Breathtaking Views
No matter where you look, you’ll be met with stunning views along the way that will make your Colorado road trip all the more memorable!
