In the Windy City, the months spanning November-March can be a struggle at best, so it makes sense that you may be a bit apprehensive to make the trek to Chicago during this time. However, winter in Chi-town absolutely is beautiful. There is something about a snow-covered Bean that makes all of the layers you will inevitably have to dawn each time you leave your hotel totally worth it. But don’t take my word for it, scroll down to see for yourself. We compiled the ultimate “Winter in Chicago” photography bucket list in hopes to convince you to pay this city a visit this season.
Cloud Gate
The early bird gets the worm, erm….. bean. It’s super easy to snap a picture of Cloud Gate sans people if you set your alarm and manage to drag yourself out of bed. Bundle up, and hit the streets before the hustle and bustle starts. Fingers crossed it snowed overnight, and you can capture the ever-elusive snow bean.
Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo
On your way to the zoo, don’t miss the chance to get a picture at this insta-famous pavilion. This bubbly, archway makes for an awesome little photo shoot as does the rest of the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo.
Under the Metro
When I think of Chi-town, I think of elevated train tracks and deep dish pizza. There is something eerie and even semi-sinister about shooting in the shadows of raised train platforms. Snap some shots under the tracks, but be sure to have all parties involved watching the others’ back. After all, I only condone playing in traffic if you’re someone I don’t particularly care for.
The Chicago Theater Sign
Can you actually say you visited the Windy City without getting a picture of the sign that dons its name? Snap a picture of the Chicago Theater’s marquee and head in for a show.
Chicago River
With a river cutting through the cityscape crisscrossed by a handful of bridges, the Chicago River is a photographer’s dream. When you’re back home, you’ll be left pining for a downtown office or apartment overlooking these serene, blue-green waters. While you’re in town, make sure to stroll along the River Walk or take a boat ride for a different perspective of the city.
The Art Institute of Chicago
Swing by the Art institute of Chicago for what other than art, duh. Again, hope for snow and snap a picture of some snowy cats on South Michigan Ave. This intuition has some great pieces and currently houses a Warhol exhibit. Don’t miss it, you have until 01/26/20!!!
Chicago Skyline at Night
Don’t leave without getting snaps of towering buildings rising up out of the Lake Michigan coast. I suggest doing this in the daytime as well as at night. Both of the views are equally satisfying. I’ve always been a sucker for well lit buildings.
Street Art
While Chicago is rather light on street art in my opinion, the city is not without. Aleah is somewhat of a spray paint bloodhound when it comes to sniffing out colorful pops of life plastered on alley walls, so we were able to find some murals. The art that does live in Chicago is as pleasing as street art anywhere else and somehow more special when found due to its relative scarcity .
Navy Pier
Hit Navy Pier for rides, games, a river cruise, or just to walk out a dock the length of 10 football fields. It might be cold, but remember, the colder it gets the less chance you have of hitting crowds. Wrap up nice and warm and enjoy this lengthy attraction.
Millennium Park/Grant Park
Post-early morning stroll to the bean, take some time to walk around Millennium Park itself or head over to Grant Park. Millennium Monument and Buckingham Fountain may be drained for the winter, but they are still impressive and worth checking out. Bonus: Go watch some senders (aka skateboarders) shred at Grant Skate Park within Grant Park. It makes for some cool action pictures juxtaposed against the high rises.
